Yuri Averbach, the world's oldest chess professor and prominent journalist, passed away at the age of 101, according to the Russian Chess Federation, and the Russian Chess Federation mourned Averbach, offering its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
On February 8, Yuri Averbach celebrated his 100th birthday, and on May 4 he was awarded the Order of Honor by decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Averbach is a former president of the Chess Federation of the USSR author of a series of books on chess, and editor-in-chief of Chess in the Soviet Union and Chess in Russia.
